The African-American Experience in Richmond

In recognition of Black History Month, The Richmond City Council sponsored a forum on Tuesday, February 6, 2007.

The 90-minute special featured a discussion focusing on the contributions of African-Americans from Richmond and a discussion on how to use the rich history to improve the conditions facing African-Americans in Richmond now and in the future.

Panelists included:

  • Richmond Vice Mayor Nat Bates

  • George Livingston, Former Richmond Mayor

  • Jim McMillian, Former Richmond City Councilman

  • Betty Reid Soskins, City of Richmond, Rosie the Riveter Historic Trust

  • Ken Nelson, President Richmond NAACP

  • Barbara Becnel, Executive Director, Neighborhood House of North Richmond

  • Rev. Andre Shumake, Richmond Improvement Association

  • Britney Beard, President of Black Student Union

  • Devario Bennett, VP Richmond Youth Commission

  • McKinley Williams, Contra Costa College, President
