"Long Odds: Where Can I Find
an Apple in Richmond?"
In 2005, ArtsChange, with collaborative partners East
Bay Center for the Performing Arts and Community
Wellness and Prevention Program, completed a 12-minute video
entitled "Long Odds: Where Can I Find an Apple in
Richmond?"
Over 50 youth participated in the production of the
educational video which uses humor and hip hop music to
explore local food access issues.
Carlitos and the Magic Garden
Carlitos and the Magic Garden
is a traveling puppet show promoting healthy eating.
It is an imaginative tale of a junk food craving little
boy who discovers the benefits of gardening, friends and
his grandma's chicken soup.
The show dramatizes the benefits of eating home-cooked
meals and fruits and vegetables instead of fast foods,
soda and sweets. The show is crafted for children 3-8
but its artistry and social messaging will appeal and
entertain all ages.
The puppet show Carlitos and the Magic Garden is
currently traveling to preschools, head start programs,
CDCs, WIC centers, libraries and community centers in
Richmond and Oakland. Please contact us at (510)
231-1348 if you are interested in having a performance
at your site.
ArtsChange's Mission:
The mission of ArtsChange is to promote imagination,
health and wellbeing in stressed East Bay neighborhoods,
by engaging artists and communities in the creation of
socially conscious art designed for accessible public
settings.
ArtsChange's History:
ArtsChange traces its origin to a Contra Costa County
health center in Richmond, CA, in 1996. Founding nurses,
doctors, frontline health center staff and visual
artists, believed in the powerful connection between art
and health and saw opportunities to engage patients,
staff and community in the arts, and for artists to
contribute to the wellbeing and healing of one of the
Bay Area's most stressed communities. ArtsChange has
produced more than 70 exhibitions at a variety of
venues, working with leading Bay Area Public Artists and
a wide variety of community partners. ArtsChange has
followed a steady course of artistic and professional
development for more than a decade, bringing visual
arts, new media, performing arts, dialogue and
educational programs to county health centers, museums,
community settings, and workplaces. ArtsChange forges
new venues and boundaries between the arts, medicine and
social change.
