A new Richmond Civic Center opened in 2009.
KCRT has two televised coverage of the 2007's
Groundbreaking Celebration and the 2009 Grand
Reopening.
On September 12, 2009, the renovated Civic Center
welcomed the community back to the heart of Richmond for
its re-dedication in a Grand Reopening event
-- almost 60 years to the day since it was first
dedicated in 1949.
Edited by KCRT's Christian Wimmer, the one-hour special
features statements from Richmond City Manager Bill
Lindsay, Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, Community &
Economic Development Director Steve Duran, NPR
National Desk Correspondent Richard Gonzales,
National Park Service Superintendent Martha Lee,
Park Ranger Betty Reid-Soskin, and many others.
The Ground-Breaking Ceremony for the Richmond Civic
Center was held on January 5, 2007 at the site for the
new renovation of the city hall complex.
Richmond City Manager Bill Lindsay acted as the
master of ceremonies for the 35-minute event with
speeches from then-Mayor Irma Anderson and
Harley A. Searcy of Alliance Property Group, Inc.
Minister Cynthia Harris of St. John Missionary
Baptist Church did the invocation.
